Update on Repower Port Augusta Campaign

The Repower Port Augusta Alliance has kept its campaign to replace the city’s aging coal-fired power stations with concentrated solar thermal going strong since 2 Degrees was released.

Significantly Alinta Energy have committed to conducting a full feasibility study into a 50MW stand alone solar thermal power station with storage that received funding from the Federal and State Governments. Initially the study was focusing on both a stand alone plant or a coal/solar hybrid but following a strong effort from the local Repower group in early July Alinta committed to solely focusing on a stand alone solar thermal power station with storage in their study. While there is still more work to be done and the plant being studied is not large enough to replace the coal stations in their entirety this is a significant step forward that has been won by the community. A full statement from Repower Port Augusta can be found here.

Repower Port Augusta is now focused on campaigning against Federal Government cuts to renewable energy funding which would severely damage the prospects of solar thermal being built in Port Augusta.
